Chief of Police

Chief Ronald Smith began his distinguished law enforcement career with the Hamden Police Department, where he served with dedication and integrity for over three decades. Starting as a Patrol Officer, he went on to serve in multiple specialized roles including Traffic Division Officer and Street Crime Unit Investigator. In 1990, he was promoted to Detective, followed by a promotion to Sergeant in 1993, with assignments in both the Patrol Division and Internal Affairs Division.

In 2002, Chief Smith rose to the rank of Lieutenant and was appointed Commander of the Internal Affairs Division. Four years later, in 2006, he was promoted to Captain and took command of the Patrol Division. In addition to his operational and leadership responsibilities, Chief Smith served as the department’s Public Information Officer for fifteen years. He concluded his tenure with Hamden PD in 2021 as the Commander of the Professional Standards Bureau.

Throughout his career, Chief Smith earned widespread recognition for his commitment to public safety and professional excellence. His commendations include:

In August 2021, Chief Smith was appointed Deputy Chief of Police for the Town of Woodbridge, where he continues to serve with distinction.

Chief Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of New Haven. He is also a graduate of the prestigious Northwestern University Center for Public Safety – School of Staff and Command.
