First Selectman Ellen Scalettar recognized the Garden Club of Woodbridge as the September Woodbridge Person of the Month. Scalettar initiated the Woodbridge Person of the Month Recognition program to spotlight the many Woodbridge residents, volunteers and employees who go above and beyond the expected in their dedication and commitment to Woodbridge and its residents.
The Garden Club is celebrating its 81st year of service to Woodbridge. The Club’s focus is civic improvement through landscaping and beautifying the center of town.
Garden Club members design, plant and manage public gardens, including the Butterfly Garden at the Library, the 9/11 Memorial at the Firehouse, the Darling House Herb Garden, the Massaro Farmhouse garden, and the garden at the corner of Meetinghouse Lane and Center Road.
At the Garden Club’s monthly meetings, the club invites the public (for a $5 fee) to lunchtime lectures on a variety of topics such as flower arranging and how to best support pollinators.
The Garden Club also provides “horticultural therapy” to residents of Coachman Square’s Alzheimer’s unit. At these therapy sessions, residents garden and learn to make beautiful flower arrangements.
Additionally, the Garden Club provides a college scholarship each year to a graduate of Amity Regional High School who plans to study horticulture or environmental studies.
Recently, the Garden Club has begun holding annual plant sales to raise money for the club. In May, club members bring perennials from their own yards for sale.
“The Garden Club of Woodbridge does so much to promote the natural beauty and quality of life in Woodbridge through their beautification efforts, educational work and horticultural therapy,” said First Selectman Ellen Scalettar.
