The Town of Woodbridge began to charge commercial haulers to use the Woodbridge Transfer Station in September 2019.
This change came after research by staff and several discussions by the Board of Selectmen.
Prior to installing a scale at the Transfer Station the Town of Woodbridge was one of a few towns that allowed private haulers to use the Transfer Station without charging by weight. Once the trash is brought to the Transfer Station the Town has to pay to dispose of it. The other towns that allow private haulers passed along their costs to the haulers but Woodbridge did not. In 2018-19 the Town paid a total of $212,970 to dispose of trash.
This means, essentially, that haulers in Woodbridge were passing along their costs to the Town and operating at significant profit.
