[ARCHIVED] Black Bear Sighting

IMG_3986

A black bear was recently seen in the backyard of a Rimmon Road residence this morning.  (See photo)

With the number of bears increasing in the state, residents should be aware that these sightings will become more frequent. Black bears are generally shy, secretive and are usually fearful of humans; however, if they continue to find food near houses, they lose their fear of humans and may regularly return to that area. Removing food attractants, such as bird feeders and outdoor garbage cans, reduces the chance that bears will go near homes.

If you see a bear, you should enjoy it from a distance, never attempt to feed it, and advertise your presence by shouting and waving your arms and walking away slowly.

Bear sightings can be reported directly to the Woodbridge Police Department at (203) 387-2511 and to the State of Connecticut Wildlife Division at (860) 675-8130.
